LAWTON, Okla. – Muslim leaders in Oklahoma are calling on the FBI to investigate what they are calling a hate crime after a dead pig was dumped outside a Lawton mosque.

It is hard to make out what exactly fell from the back of a truck, but some believe it sent a clear message.

“We decided it was important to call upon law enforcement to look at it as a possible hate crime, because it seems very clear that somebody went out of their way to send a message of hate and intimidation toward the Muslim community by getting a pig carcass and transporting it to an Islamic Center,” CAIR director Adam Soltani said.

Someone dumped it outside the building.

Surveillance video from the Islamic Center in Lawton shows the incident unfold.

Police found the carcass and notified the center’s leaders.

“Pork is forbidden for Muslims to consume,” Soltani said. “So somebody had to be aware that pork is forbidden, that it would be deemed offensive to Muslims to find a pig carcass at their Islamic Center.”

Soltani says there has been an increase in incidents like this all over the country during this election season, but says it has been happening for years.

One of the most recent in Oklahoma happened last year when someone vandalized the Islamic Center in Edmond with bacon.

“Bacon was wrapped around door handles of the Islamic Society of Edmond and left in the parking lot,” Soltani said. “The first thing that comes to my mind is the security and safety of the Muslim community, because if somebody is willing to go so far out of their way to send a message of hate to try to intimidate a certain group of people, you’re concerned will they do something more? Will they physically harm somebody?”

The carcass was removed before prayer services Friday.
