SHAWNEE, Okla. – A stray pitbull is fighting for his life after suffering horrible burns on his back from some sort of acid.

The dog, named Devlin, is being nursed back to health in Shawnee, but workers say it is going to be a long road to recovery.

Devlin is an Irish and Scottish name, meaning fierce and strong.

“He’s a champ. He doesn’t really complain at all and it’s very obvious that it’s pretty painful,” said Chris Bellinger, D.V.M., Veterinary Services.

On Tuesday, workers with the Animal Welfare Division found Devlin in an open field.

His injuries were severely infested with maggots.

“He had what appeared to be chemical burns all along his back, pretty much the base of his head to the start of his tail,” said Chris Bellinger, who is treating Devlin.

Right now, veterinarians are changing his bandages to prevent other infections.

Once he is ready, he will be transferred to 1 Day Ranch in Bethel Acres to continue the rehabilitation process.

“We’re going to fight for him as well, and as soon as he’s healthy again, then we will get him adopted out to his new home,” said Maeghan Olson, 1 Day Ranch founder.

Veterinarians believe that he was maliciously attacked.

“Understand this is not okay, this is not something that’s acceptable for anyone. Teach your children this, this is something they need to understand,” said Olson.

1 Day Ranch is accepting donations to help with Devlin’s medical bills, which are expected to top $2,000.

“We expect a full recovery, he’ll make a great dog for somebody,” said Bellinger.

If you know any information about this dog’s injuries, call Crime Stoppers at 235-7300 or by calling the Animal Welfare Division’s dispatch at 297-2255.
