BETHEL, Okla. -- A teacher is accused of having sex with a student in the small town of Bethel.

Wendy Hickman 40, resigned as a freshman English teacher this week as investigators moved in.

A 16-year-old male student told police Hickman performed oral sex on him and they had vaginal sex at his house over the summer break.

The teen also told detectives she sent him nude pictures and salacious text messages.

"We recovered a cell phone and we are getting additional information off the phone," says Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth.

"When I was growing up, you went to school and was safe. Now when you go to school, you're just as much in danger now as if you had a drunk living next door," says Connie, mother of seven.

Superintendent Jerry Johnson says, "My high school staff, my middle school staff and support personnel are meeting this afternoon with other staff members to discuss our next steps. We're very dedicated to the safety of our students. We are working with local law enforcement agencies."

This isn't the first teacher sexual abuse case to rock the county.

Kimberly Crain from McCloud faces 31 counts of various sexual abuse.

"A couple years ago in Wanette a teacher got pregnant by and 8th grader," Connie says.

Resident Shannon Brooks says, "It's sad because we're suppose to be able to trust our children with their teachers. We have to be afraid of everybody it seems."

Investigators are working to learn if there are more victims. Wendy Hickman is booked in the Pottawatomie county jail facing 2nd degree rape charges.
