OKLAHOMA CITY-A foot chase on the city’s northeast side ends with an officer involved shooting.

A witness said, “I heard gunshots and I ran; that’s all.”

A group of frightened preteen girls were enjoying a birthday party at a nearby park when gunfire erupted.

“We saw a man run and we was just laughing because we didn’t know what he was running for.”

An officer was chasing the man near N.E. 17th St. and Kate when the suspect allegedly pulled out a weapon.

Capt. Dexter Nelson with the Oklahoma City Police Department said, “Shots were fired at the subject when the subject turned on the officers with a weapon.”

The suspect, who witnesses described as a black male in his 20’s, was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Capt. Nelson said, “They have to protect themselves. Obviously, if a man points a gun at you, you’re going to shoot him.”

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

As for why police were chasing the man in the first place, they tell us officers were taking part in an off-duty program to watch out for gangs.

When officers approached the man, the suspect ran.
