SHAWNEE, Okla. - A Pottawatomie County girl is rushed to the hospital after an accidental shooting Wednesday night near Twin Lakes, west of Shawnee.

That's where investigators said an 11-year-old boy shot his 12-year-old sister.

The Pott. County sheriff said no one has been arrested following the shooting, but the incident does serve as an important safety reminder to gun owners everywhere.

"They were goofing off in the bedroom of the travel trailer," Pott. County undersheriff JT Palmer said. "The young man did not think the gun was loaded and pointed it at her and pulled the trigger."

Sheriff's investigators said the shooter immediately called 911 and put pressure on his sister's wound while waiting for help to arrive.

Investigators said they believe the shooting was simply an unfortunate accident and not a crime.

"At this time we have no evidence that it's anything but an accident," Palmer said.

"I'm sure it was an accident," neighbor Jeremy Lane said.

Neighbors like Jeremy agree with police and said the shooting can also be a reminder for parents everywhere to make sure kids understand guns are not toys and to keep all weapons safely stored whenever kids are home alone.

"Lock them up somewhere," Lane said. "I'm not a gun guy. I don't know. That's one of the reasons I'm not."

Both the mom and dad were away from home at the time of the shooting.

The mother was working an extra shift at a store on I-240 to cover the holiday schedule.

The sheriff's office will forward the case to the district attorney to decide if any criminal charges should be filed.

The little girl was flown to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

Neither her name nor the name of her brother are being released.
