CHICKASHA, Okla. - Chickasha police said a woman tried to steal $300.00 worth of lighters from a Love’s gas station over the holiday weekend.
The apparent thief didn’t get far, when police got to the scene, the woman was crying and screaming inside the store.
In a report, officers said the woman was pulling lighters off of the store shelves and even bit the store clerk on the hand in the process.
"I don't know why she would bite somebody. She must have been awfully hungry or something," said James Hartline, Chickasha resident.
James Hartline was shocked to hear about the arrest of 23-year-old Amanda Taff.
According to the report, it was Saturday when Taff went to the Love’s Country Store near 4th & Georgia in Chickasha.
The clerk working noticed Taff walk in wearing a white bandana and grey hoodie.
He asked her if she needed help, she said no.
That's when Taff apparently started to stuff a pink bag, full of 113 regular Bic lighters, 49 mini Brio lighters and 40 mini Bic lighters.
"She tried to fight with me and she bit me on my hand in the scuffle," the clerk said in a written statement.
"I think that's crazy!" said Hartline.
The lighters totaled $299.98!
"I feel that she was in the wrong. I couldn't see what she'd steal 200 lighters for," said Hartline.
When officers got to the scene, they placed Taff under arrest.
"She needs to get her punishment and learn not to steal," said Hartline.
It’s still unclear what Taff’s motive was; she was booked into the Grady County jail.
Taff is facing charges of petit larceny of merchandise from a retailer and assault and battery for apparently biting the clerk’s hand.
