THE VILLAGE, Okla. — Strange smells lead to legal action against a homeowner in The Village. For the past three to four years neighbors like Chad Randall have complained about 2425 Barclay.
“Most of the neighbors around here can smell it in the morning or in the evenings. It’s just real noxious, what you would have to think would be cat urine,” Randall said.
They signed a petition to have City Council to step in.
The Village City Manager Bruce Stone says they got no response.
“Under Oklahoma law you have a misdemeanor, you have to serve a citation personally and she wouldn’t come to the door. We could never catch her, so we were kind of at a dead end,” Stone says.
Now the city is filing a suit in District Court for abatement.
If they win, they’ll be allowed to go in the house and clean up.
Stone says the homeowner finally contacted him after the story went public.
“First of all, she said she was not aware of the complaints and was not aware they were trying to contact her. She thought the smell was coming from glue remover she was using to remove the floor of one of the rooms in the house,” Stone says.
Stone says even though the woman says she is taking care of the smell, the city is still moving ahead with the lawsuit.
