OKLAHOMA CITY - Thieves targeted a daycare center, stealing copper from the A/C units and disabling them on one of the hottest days this year.

It happened over the weekend at the Childcare Network on N.W. 150th St., between May and Portland.

Now the center is fighting back against these copper crooks.

Center director Marquise Robertson said, "Why would someone want to do that when they know this a place where we have to accommodates kids?"

That's just one of the many questions the staff are asking in the wake of these thefts.

The damaged machines couldn't handle Monday's hot weather so the center was shut down all day Tuesday for emergency repairs, sending parents scrambling.

"It just made it really hard for some of the parents to find alternate care and had to call in at the last minute," Robertson said.

After the thefts, the center installed extra security and cameras to help keep it from happening again.

Childcare Network spent thousands of dollars getting their A/C units back up and running by Wednesday.

Because so many parents depend on them during the summer, crimes like this one concern staff; however, they're confident the new and improved security will help keep the kids safe and comfortable.

"Hopefully, with that in place, this should be something that we don't have to worry about anymore," Robertson said.

This particular Childcare Network takes care of almost 200 kids, newborn to school age, so keeping the A/C running during hot days is mandatory.

If you know anything about thefts, police would like to talk to you.
