LOS ANGELES – Voters in one state could have a say on how many stars may be added to the American flag.

According to USA Today, a Silicon Valley official has created a petition that would break California into six smaller states.

According to the ballot initiative, California is too big and inefficient to be easily governed.

Tim Draper is proposing the ‘Golden State’ be broken into Silicon Valley, West California, Central California, South California, North California and Jefferson.

Now, supporters are trying to collect 807,000 signatures by July 18 to get the measure on the ballot.

Even if voters approved the move in November, Congress would have to approve the new states and the addition of 10 senators to the mix.

California is home to 38 million people.
