OKLAHOMA CITY - An Oklahoma father faces murder charges in the death of his 3-month-old daughter.

Family members of Kentrell Thomas were shocked over his arrest, saying that he is a good dad.

“He loves his kids to death,” said Richard Williams told NewsChannel 4 on Friday. “He gives them baths and feeds them.”

It was a bath that court records say may have led to the death of his youngest child, 3-month-old Jhanell Martinez.

Jhanell was brought to the hospital last Thursday with multiple unexplained fractures to her head.

“She was severely injured and showed signs of extreme abuse,” said MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Police later arrested Kentrell Thomas and say Jhanell died a short time later. According to court documents, Thomas admitted he was alone with the infant for an hour when her mother left.

During that time, he gave the baby a bath, and when he was drying her hair, he says he dropped her.

According to court records, “Kentrell stated he had been standing when he dropped her and her head hit the bathtub.” It also claims that her "symptoms began after he dropped her on her head.”

Investigators say it happened on Wednesday afternoon but the baby wasn't taken to the hospital until Thursday.

Records show Thomas never told the baby's mother what happened and that “Kendrell failed to provide pertinent information regarding his daughter's injury, delaying care for her severe injuries.”

Police say they are still collecting evidence.

“The investigation is still ongoing to see if there was anyone else in the house who knew what was going on,” said Knight.

Investigators also say there are several holes in the statement Thomas gave and a child abuse specialist says his “story was not consistent with the severity of victim's injuries.”
