EDMOND, Okla. — There was a large house fire around 7 p.m. on Venus Circle by Val Genes Dr. in Edmond, near 15th and Kelly.

A neighbor says they thought it was their home on fire.

“I could smell it inside my house,” Corey Hayward, a neighbor said.

Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, neighbors walked out to the home and saw it covered in flames and thick smoke.

“When they got here, there were flames shooting through the roof,” Jenny Monroe with Edmond Police says.

A woman in her 60s was found dead in a back bedroom, police say.

They say she was already in cardiac arrest.

“It was heart-wrenching. We saw them working on a lady and get transported away,” Lindsay Wright, another neighbor said.

Police say the fire may have started at the back of the house, but that is just preliminary.

“Conditions presented themselves (sic) with thick black smoke all the way to the ground, zero visibility, moderate heat inside the building,” Chris Denton, Edmond Deputy Fire Chief said.

Neighbors say the fire was so heavy they thought the fire was coming from their home.

“it was a pretty frightening scene,” Wright says.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Investigators say the woman was home alone at the time.

There were also several animals that were rescued from inside the home.
