ADA, Okla.- Authorities say a mother and stepfather are facing child abuse charges after allegedly causing permanent damage to an infant.

Officers were called to a hospital after doctors admitted a 4-month-old baby with severe cranial bleeding.

The child’s mother, Cassie Stewart, told doctors that the child fell from a baby swing at their house in Ada.

However, officials say the child’s injuries were not consistent with that story.

The baby was transferred to OU Medical Center for more intensive care.

According to the arrest affidavit, doctors determined the child’s injuries were consistent with being shaken and he also suffered 13 rib fractures that were in various stages of healing.

Cassie Stewart told authorities that her husband, David Stewart, was with the child when she left for work that day.

In the report, officials claim David continually changed his story about how the baby was injured in the swing.

After hearing about the extent of the child’s injuries, officers ordered a physical for the victim’s twin brother.

That test revealed that he also suffered 21 rib fractures at different stages of healing.

The Pontotoc County District Attorney confirms that the infant is now deaf and blind as a result of the abuse.

As a result, the district attorney says child abuse charges are pending against David and Cassie Stewart.
