EDMOND, Okla. -- It was an ordinary morning at Safety First Gun Range near Danforth and Kelly in Edmond.

Police say a 56-year-old Edmond man came in around 10 a.m., signed a waiver form and rented a Glock pistol.

"He came out to the range. He had ear and eye protection and bought a target. He hung that target up and put the ear protection on just like anyone who would practice with the firearm. Unfortunately in this case, he shot himself. He inserted just one bullet in the gun," Sgt. James Hamm, with the Edmond Police Department, said.

"There was no indication this guy was suicidal. They wouldn't rent anything to someone mentally unstable contemplating suicide. From everything that was described to us and what we saw on the video, he was going in there acting like any other person coming in to shoot with ear phones and practice target," Hamm said.

Police would not speculate on a motive.

However, we do know the victim was under investigation for a high-dollar antique car scheme.

According to court documents obtained by NewsChannel 4, authorities "received information regarding two (2) classic Ford Shelby Mustangs which were believed to be 'cloned vehicles.'"

A search warrant was recently conducted at the man's home where detectives seized "books, records, receipts, bank statements, and records of financial transactions, including but not limited to vehicle titles, repair bills, and receipts for vehicle parts."

Despite paramedic's best efforts to save the man, he died about an hour after being rushed to the hospital, leaving police, family and friends with many unanswered questions.

He had not been arrested or charged with any crimes related to the search warrant on his property.

On Thursday, Edmond police identified the man as 56-year-old Kermit Milburn.
