OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Okla. – Officials with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office are warning residents about a scam that is targeting victims’ bank accounts.
Deputies say they have received several phone calls from people claiming to be from the sheriff’s office. The alleged scammer will tell the victim that they have been fined for missing jury duty or for a warrant.
The caller will then say to avoid any further penalties, the victim needs to purchase a money card like a Green Dot or pay a fine through PayPal.
The sheriff’s office says they will never solicit fine payments over the phone.
If you get a call like this, do not give out any personal information or make a payment.
Instead, call the sheriff’s office and make a report.
