EDMOND, Okla. - An Edmond high school student has been arrested for allegedly holding up a fast food joint with an air soft gun.

The suspect, not only in trouble for the attempted robbery, but also for how he altered the so-called weapon.

“The suspect gave the cashier a note demanding the money and then pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the cashier,” Jenny Monroe, with the Edmond Police Department, said.

The attempted armed robbery happened at a Jack In The Box near Danforth and Santa Fe Monday afternoon.

Police say the suspect came in with his face covered.

An employee says the register wouldn’t open, which made the suspect nervous.

“He took the note from her, got frustrated and ran out,” Monroe said.

The employees at the store would not do an on camera interview, but they said, off-camera, the man was in the store less than 15 seconds before he ran out and headed south.

Police found the suspect, Benjamin Childress, just a few blocks away at a neighborhood park.

“He was on the playground area, out of breath, covered in mud. He had pulled the top layer of clothing off,” Monroe said. “He just was out of place and a little old to be swinging in the park.”

Police also found a bag nearby with the clothes used in the robbery as well as that weapon.

But it turns out the gun was actually an air soft gun. Police say the suspect had removed the orange tip.

“You can't be in possession of an air soft gun without that orange tip,” Monroe said.

Edmond police say removing the orange tip is not only against the law (in Edmond), it's a risky move for anyone to make.

“These decisions are split second decisions, and so to alter an air soft gun where it looks like an actual weapon is a dangerous game to play,” Monroe said.

Police say Childress is just 18 years old. They say he is a student at an Edmond high school.

He is now facing charges for attempted robbery.

He will also be fined for removing the orange tip from the airsoft gun and for threatening someone with the gun.
