OKLAHOMA CITY - A 6-year-old boy who fell into Lake Stanley Draper during an outing with his mother and siblings Wednesday afternoon has died, officials said Wednesday evening.

Divers found the boy near a boat dock at the lake's marina shortly before 3:00 p.m. Firefighters could be seen running the boy to a waiting stretcher before being loaded into an ambulance and rushed to Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Officials say the boy was visiting the lake with his mother and three siblings when he fell off the boat dock into the water.

"They wanted to get out of the house, and kids wanted to look at the water," said Oklahoma City Fire Capt. David Macy. "Mom brought them down here to the lake and it's one of the situations where the kids get out of the car run toward the water before she could catch up with them, the 6-year-old fell off the end of the dock."

Macy said the boy's mother jumped in the water to try and pull out her son, but realized she couldn't, and then called 911 shortly after 2:00 p.m. With a fire station just up the road, fire crews arrived minutes later and began using poles to search the water, trying to pinpoint the boy's location. Divers arrived on scene and found the boy in about 11 feet of water. However, by that point, he had been submerged for nearly an hour.

He was quickly rushed into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

"The water temperature today is 59 degrees here at the lake," said Macy, optimistic the cooler water temperature would aid in the boy's survival chances. "So that actually plays a good role in a situation, because the colder the water, the longer a child will be able to survive after a submersion injury like that."

The boy was in cardiac arrest and transported to the hospital in critical condition. However, police said late Wednesday night the boy was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating.
