Semi driver falls asleep at the wheel, crashes into bridge along I-44 near Chickasha

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Officials are investigating after a semi crashed along an interstate near Chickasha Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the scene on westbound I-44, also the H.E. Bailey Turnpike, five miles north of Chickasha, at around 10 a.m.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the driver was westbound on the interstate when he fell asleep and departed the roadway to right, hitting a guardrail face. The semi then hit a bridge abutment.

The report states the driver was ejected and another passenger was pinned.

The driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition and the passenger was treated and released.

OHP officials say the cause of the crash was due to the driver falling asleep.
