OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Thunder fans are able to get their hands on a bit of history.

On Monday night, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook was named the NBA’s ‘Most Valuable Player.’

Just hours after the announcement, fans began purchasing the first Westbrook MVP t-shirts.

“All I know was I saw about eight to 10 boxes and they said go,” Russell Dewberry told NewsChannel 4.

Boxes and boxes of Westbrook MVP t-shirts were the first priority for employees of the Thunder shop at the Chesapeake Energy Arena on Tuesday morning.

“You’re sitting there wondering if he was going to win and, when he did, we all texted each other and said ‘We gotta be at work at 6 a.m.,’” Dewberry said.

The store opened three hours early for fans hoping to get their hands on one of the first shirts paying tribute to Westbrook’s big honor.

“I was very excited because, with a franchise that’s less than 10 years, we’ve had two MVPs,” Dewberry said. “We had an MVP that actually broke a 60-year-old NBA record.”

Fans tell NewsChannel 4 this makes for an exciting time to be a Thunder fan.

“I was like yes! Yes! I knew he was going to get it, but I’m glad he was finally validated for his season,” said Daniel Joslin.

Joslin didn’t waste any time Tuesday morning. He was the second customer to purchase an MVP t-shirt.

“It feels awesome. He’s my favorite athlete, so I had to get one,” Joslin said.

Employees at Chesapeake Arena’s Thunder shop said fans can expect four more NBA MVP t-shirts to hit the shelves in the coming days.
