OKLAHOMA CITY — We are in the height of the sick season and it seems little ones are often the most affected. Working parents know that the unwritten rule is children rarely get sick during regular business hours.Kids First OKC opens on Saturday near NW 122nd and May.It's the city's first pediatric after-hours urgent care clinic. Dr. Denise Scott is one of the 11 founding partners.

“Kids are not small adults. There is a whole new set of illness that occur in children that don't occur in adults,” she said. The pediatricians of Kids First OKC can treat a variety of minor emergencies including ear infections, flu, strep, stitches, coughs and colds. Urgent care is a faster, more affordable alternative for families who might consider taking sick kiddoes to the emergency room. Dr. Scott. says, “We will refer on things that need to be handled in the emergency rooms. But the majority of cases that present in pediatrics to ERs can really be handled non-emergency in this setting.”Dr. Tony Leveridge says they hope to eliminate trips to the ER for busy families. However, Kids First OKC does not want to replace a trusted family physician. The founding doctors come from two of the metro's largest pediatric groups. Most of them have been in practice 20 years or more. Dr. Tony Leveridge says, “When I first started in practice we didn't have too many after-hours clinics. Most people waited to see their doctor. But the world has changed. Many families have two working parents or single parents. It's hard to take-off to come in during regular conventional office hours. We feel this serves an end for the community.”Kids First OKC is hiring pediatricians who are interested in working after-hours.For more information, go to
