OKLAHOMA CITY—Five parents and grandparents who worked hard to save for their child or grandchild’s college education got quite a surprise Monday afternoon.

State Treasurer Ken Miller announced the winners of the “Making A Difference” essay contest with the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan.

One winner from each Congressional district received a check for $1,529, which is headed to their 529 plan.

Nearly 200 Oklahomans shared their story on how the college savings plan has impacted or will impact their lives.

A single mother from Broken Arrow was among the winners.

The widow has been using her 529 plan to help keep her husband’s memory alive.

Stephanie Jackson said, “We actually take all of, most of everything on his Social Security and we put it into her 529. And that’s my way of saying her dad is going to pay for her going to school and still benefitting in her life and contributing to her life.”

Miller says the 529 plan is a huge benefit for middle class, working families.

In addition to saving for your child’s college education, it also provides a nice tax break.
