INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - After Jonathan Cruz was arrested for allegedly murdering three strangers at random, two women said they are standing by him.
Jonathan Cruz, 19, is accused of killing Billy Boyd and Jay Higginbotham on May 12.
Just a few days later, Cruz is accused of killing Jose Ruiz inside his car.
Court documents allege that Cruz picked his victims at random, adding that he made references to the movie "The Purge."
Police also say they found a gun that tested positive as the murder weapon at Cruz's home.
When Cruz appeared before a judge on Thursday, there were two women who were watching and supporting him.
"He's not evil like they're making him out to be. He's fun but not violent," said Ricki Cline, the mother of Cruz's daughter.
However, even Cruz's alleged partner in crime disagrees.
Steven Clark, who is accused of helping Cruz rob a man last month, told police that Cruz "was a very violent person, specified that he had 'no heart."
Also, Clark said that when they needed something, Cruz would "think of the evilest thing possible to get it."
Cline and Cruz's current girlfriend, Angela Barger, say they don't believe the allegations.
"I highly doubt that he done it," Cline told FOX 59. "It's not him. I've know him for two years and have a kid with him."
"He doesn't have to be a serial killer like you all are saying," Cline said. "His daughter has to miss out on his life now because people want to be immature."
When asked who was being immature, Barger said, "People who are testifying against him are saying that he has done this stuff are trying to get themselves out of trouble."
Cruz is charged with 17 counts, including three counts of murder.
His trial is set to begin Aug. 1.
