COLUMBIA, S.C. – No one suspected that they would become the target of a robbery while getting their hair cut on Friday night.
Surveillance cameras were rolling when two armed men wearing masks walked into the Next Up Barber and Beauty shop and demanded money.
The thieves told several customers and barbers to get on the floor, while others were simple forced to stay in their chairs with their hands up.
“He smacked me in the back of my head, and I said, ‘Okay, this is probably when he’s going to shoot me now and just set an example and walk on out the door with the money,” said Chauncy Harris.
However, things took a very different turn.
When the suspects turned their backs, one of the seemingly innocuous patrons reached into his pocket and pulled out a gun.
Officials with the Columbia Police Department say two of the victims were concealed carry permit holders and were simply waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
The men shot at both suspects, hitting one of the men, who collapsed outside the business. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Authorities say they are not sure if the second suspect suffered any injuries because he was able to escape from the scene.
Fortunately, none of the customers were injured.
