NORMAN, OKLAHOMA — The baristas at this Starbucks in Norman know her as ‘green tea no ice’.

Nicole Waggoner is a regular here, snatching a little hydration and quiet time when she can, and always writing.

“In the wee hours of the morning, late at night, during any free hours that I had,” she says.

This is a different August for Waggoner though, who’s been an English teacher for the past 10 years in Texas, mostly to 8th graders.

She moved to Oklahoma for her husband’s job and started working on something she had always thought about, writing her own literature.

Nicole smiles, “The joke is that I moved to Oklahoma for my husband’s profession and that I missed my girlfriends so much that I made up five imaginary friends and wrote a book.”

So we’re back, this time at another of her local haunts, still writing.

This April, her first book came out called ‘Center Ring’.

It’s about a group of 5 women and how they all handle a revelation one of the friends drops at dinner.

“What she has to say rocks this group to its core,” says Waggoner.

Nicole had a couple of kids of her own.

She wrote the book at nap times and while waiting for orders.

But she also wrote it with friends.

She sent out pages and installments to Facebook pals who both encouraged and commented, kind of like a teacher might with a good English paper.

Waggoner says, “There were several times when, if it hadn’t been for that focus group I would have just pressed delete.”

Her final letter grade, a series of warm, green teas and an A+ in the form of good sales.

Looks like all that time in English class really paid off.

Waggoner’s book ‘Center Ring’ made a best book club pick of 2016.

It’s also a Barnes and Noble Book Club Pick for this year.

Nicole is scheduled to appear at the Norman Barnes and Noble August 21st to sign copies and answer reader questions.
