OGDEN, Utah (KSTU) – Authorities say a 23-year-old man has been arrested after police say he abused his girlfriend’s 14-month-old child, leading to her death.

Ogden police say 23-year-old Adam Barney is facing charges of child abuse homicide and has two misdemeanor warrants out of Ogden.

According to KSTU, authorities say Barney called 911 to say his girlfriend’s toddler was not waking up from her nap.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the toddler dead in a hotel room.

Ogden officials say Barney eventually confessed to hitting the girl, Kenzie Rose, several times and “squeezing her substantially.”

The toddler’s mother says Barney was taking care of the children while she worked.

“I needed someone I could trust to be there with the kids and I didn’t see this coming at all; there had been no warning signs,” said Kaci Rupert. “The children always told me that , you know, he was fun, they were happy, he was great to be around.”
