RALEIGH, N.C. (WRAL) – Police say a North Carolina woman was shot and killed this weekend by her boyfriend.

At the time of the shooting, Kimberly Richardson was six months pregnant and was excited to become a new mom.

Friends say after learning she was having a girl, Richardson started thinking about baby names.

She ultimately decided to name her child ‘Lacey.’

“She was really, really happy. I sent her a text the day before she went to go find out the sex of the baby and just told her how happy I was for her and how excited I am,” said Paige Bragdon, Kimberly’s friend.

Sadly, the mother-to-be will never get the chance to meet her little girl.

Police say Richardson’s boyfriend, Daniel Steele, shot her Saturday night near the mall where she worked.

After being shot, she called 911 dispatchers for help.

“He shot me,” she told dispatchers.

When asked for her phone number, Richardson told the dispatcher, “I can’t … I can’t talk.”

When paramedics arrived, they rushed her into emergency surgery.

Richardson died from her injuries.

Against the odds, her baby survived the attack.

Steele is now being charged with first-degree murder.
