LAWTON, Okla. – An Oklahoma man who reportedly helped save a pregnant stabbing victim’s life says he was in the right place at the right time.
Kevin Painter told KSWO that he was on his way to do some shopping when he saw the man swinging a knife at the woman.
He says he immediately jumped into action to help the woman.
“If somebody didn’t stop him, he was going to kill her,” said Painter.
Painter is a medic for the Oklahoma National Guard and an assistant Boy Scout scoutmaster.
However, despite that experience, he said the stabbing on I-35 was something he had never seen before.
“We’re trained for combat situations, not your everyday run of the mill stuff. But this was by no means run of the mill,” Painter told KSWO.
Painter says he pulled off the interstate and was able to park between Hillard and the woman.
Other witnesses began to do the same thing.
Painter says that is when Hillard got scared and jumped off the bridge and into the Oklahoma River.
Painter tried to stop the bleeding while they waited for emergency crews.
He told KSWO that his training in the Boy Scouts helped him keep calm in this wild situation.
“I always kind of think about the Boy Scout motto, ‘Be prepared.’ And it doesn’t mean for one thing in particular, it means for anything,” said Painter.
Exactly why Hillard allegedly attacked his girlfriend, who’s currently 8 months pregnant, remains a mystery.
“It doesn’t appear there was any reason. She said as they were driving along. He said he felt strange and then began stabbing her. Nothing provoked this,” said Oklahoma City police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow.
The suspect was booked into jail on a charge of assault with dangerous weapon.
The victim is expected to be okay.
