BETHANY, Okla.- Everyone is rooting for Izzy Kitterman after a horrible traffic accident in Purcell sent her to the hospital.

Celebrities, fellow friends and her new family at the Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital have supported her along the way.

“She was really unable to move, and we had to use a ventilator to breathe for her,” said Dr. Steven Couch, a neurodevelopmental pediatrician.

13-year-old Izzy was one of six passengers in a SUV when it rear ended a semi-truck July 17. Four people were killed, including her brother, Beck.

She and another teen went to the hospital in critical condition.

“She had a broken bone in her neck and she had several broken bones down her back. It’s the broken bone in her neck that injured her spinal cord,” said Dr. Couch.

“Within about a month’s time, we had her completely weaned from the ventilator. She was breathing on her own day and night,” David Owens, respiratory therapist at The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital, said.

It was amazing for the staff at TCC to watch.

“A lot of her progression to where she is today from where she admitted was surprising. We anticipated her needing a ventilator for the rest of her life,” said Owens.

That’s why, on Tuesday, this strong teenager got to go home to the Tulsa area. A send-off just in time for the holidays.

“For her to progress to this point that she’s at and it to be timed well for the holidays, is going to be great for her,” Owens said.

Izzy still has a long way to go, but her smile shows strength through all of the trauma she’s already had to experience at such a young age.
