ATLANTA, Ga. (WXIA) – Someone is targeting families whose children have cancer by derailing a Facebook page and sending hurtful emails to parents.
A Facebook page devoted to telling the heart-wrenching stories of children, toddlers and teens who are batting the disease was taken over by hackers this weekend.
“All of us who have administrative privileges to our Facebook page have been blocked so we have no control whatsoever over the content on our Facebook page,” said Kristen Conner, with CURE Childhood Cancer.
When Conner alerted the cancer community about the Facebook hack, several families said they had received horrible emails from the hackers that referenced their children who had just died.
“I cried when I read the emails,” said Conner.
In one email, the hackers wrote that a child “is laying completely stiff in full rigor mortis and naked in the freezer in the morgue right now.”
CURE isn’t convinced the hacking of their Facebook account and the emails are related, but says the effects on the community as a whole are devastating.
“I want this to stop. I want this cruel, sick harassment to stop,” she said.
