OKLAHOMA CITY – A local group is hoping to help get Oklahomans into the spirit of giving this winter.

“The Holiday Humanist Adoption Gifting Project” is part of FreeOK’s 2013 giving drive.

The drive is aimed at providing holiday gifts to children in foster care and shelters, as well as families impacted by the government shutdown.

Organizers gather wishlists through community groups and independent nominations made through the group’s website.

On Friday, the wishlists were posted for sponsors to adopt those enrolled in the program by purchasing gifts to be delivered throughout December.

Over 90 children have enrolled in the project since its unveiling in early October.

Some of the wishlists are written as letters to Santa but the project is not limited to children.

People have enrolled adult family members so they can afford food for holiday meals.

“I’m very excited about the response the project has received from the humanist community at large,” said Aimee Breeze, Director for FreeOK. “We have almost as many sponsor inquiries as we do candidates and adoptions haven’t even begun just yet. Everyone with whom I have discussed the project is enthusiastic about getting to know these kids through their wishlists and helping these families through the holidays.”

Organizers say it is an easy way to spread the spirit of giving without fighting the holiday rush at the stores.

Sponsors can simply adopt a wishlist from the group’s website and purchase the gifts through the group’s Amazon wishlist.

The gifts will then be sent directly to the group and sponsors will receive a souvenir ornament for their participation.

Red Dirt Report offices in Oklahoma City have also signed on to act as a gift drop location through Dec. 19.
