CENTREVILLE, Va. – A teenager is dead after investigators say she overdosed on a drug that was given to her at a party.

“That is my baby sister and it kills me that when people hear her name, it’s going to be associated with drugs and heroin and she’s never done it in her whole life,” Devin Springer told WJLA.

Investigators say 17-year-old Alexia Springer was found dead in her bedroom of an apparent drug overdose.

Springer was a homecoming princess who was studying to be a dental hygienist.

On Monday evening, family members say Springer went to a small birthday party at a friend’s house. They’re told she was drinking and that someone gave her a powder to inhale.

“This was in a family’s home. The parents were there. This happened in a basement in a bathroom, the parents were upstairs,” Springer’s mother, Rona Powell, said.

Officials told WJLA that they have seen a spike in heroin overdoses and deaths, adding that charges are pending in this case.
