EDMONTON, Alberta –  A homeless man in Canada with a talent for music is winning over fans online.

In the middle of downtown, Roslyn Polard heard a beautiful melody that she knew she had to record.

“I wanted to show it to my kids. I wanted to show it to my friends. It was kind of unbelievable,” Polard said.

Ryan Arcand, 43, had no idea he was the star of a video that went viral.

“This song always gets to me. It’s the one I wrote,” he said.

He says he was put into foster care as a young child and it was in one of those homes where he first played a piano.

“I was in tears with this piano. It was like it never had been touched. It never had been touched at all,” he said.

Arcand has lived on the street for most of his life and is consumed by addiction.

Through it all, he has kept his love of music alive.

“Music, it becomes a part of you, like you are born with it,” he said.

Later in the day, Polard came to learn more about the man she recorded.

“It is not a happy story and there is not a happy ending, I don’t think. This is not something that YouTube is going to fix,” she said.

The video likely won’t change Arcand’s life but is a sad reminder that beauty and promise can be found anywhere.

Polard says that any money made through the video will be donated to an agency that helps the homeless.
