LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Authorities are investigating why a passenger jet almost ran out of fuel before landing at an airport in North Dakota.
The airport was the flight’s intended destination, but it was temporarily closed so the Navy’s Blue Angels flying team could practice.
The air traffic controller said there would be a window to land in Fargo in 20 minutes.
“I don’t have 20 minutes,” the pilot said.
At that point, an air traffic controller told the pilot that he could go to another airport, but the pilot can be heard saying he didn’t have enough fuel to make it to another airport.
Now, the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
“At this time, we are coordinating with the FAA and the airport to investigate all channels of communication regarding the flight and the circumstances leading to the declaration of emergency,” Allegiant said.
The FAA says Allegiant 426 should have known the airspace was closed if the pilot had reviewed the Notices to Airmen before takeoff.
