VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A sixth grade student says she was simply trying to stop a classmate from hurting himself but school officials say her actions broke policy, which turned into a suspension.

Last Thursday, sixth-grader Adrionna Harris saw a classmate cutting his arm at Bayside Middle School was a small razor.

Rachael Harris, Adrionna’s mother, said, “I feel she did the right thing under the circumstances. She thought he would bleed out. He was cutting himself and there is no teacher in sight. It was a 911 situation and there wasn’t time to find a teacher.”

Adrionna took the razor blade away from the boy, convincing him that he didn’t need to hurt himself.razor

Adrionna says she threw away the razor immediately and told school officials.

However, they took her act as violation of the school’s zero tolerance policy on weapons.

Instead of getting praise for quick-thinking, she received a 10 day suspension with a recommendation for expulsion.

Adrionna says, “I was just trying to help.”

According to WAVY, if Adrionna hadn’t told administrators what happened, she would not have been punished.

Adrionna said, “Even if I got in trouble, it didn’t matter because I was helping him.”

Adrionna’s mother called the school but never received a call back about the incident.

After a bit of media attention, the district called her family and moved up her suspension hearing.

The school board voted to not expel Adrionna.

Adrionna was still suspended for a week but was allowed back to class on Friday.

Her family was still concerned about her permanent record.

However, school officials announced the suspension was cleared from her record.
