EL RENO, Okla. -- Law enforcement in El Reno are investigating a shoot-out at a home that left two men dead. Police say the homeowner shot and killed the men after an altercation.
“Just shock and disbelief that this has gone this way,” said Cathy Harrelson.
It happened at a home on Jensen road.
“Just completely senseless and avoidable. I can't believe it’s come to this,” said Josh Harrelson.
That's how Cathy and her son Josh describe the afternoon they say their family was put in an impossible situation.
It started over a vehicle that was left on their property.
“The vehicle was purchased for my son, and due to some marital issues, my daughter-in-law went to her father and told him that Josh has taken it unauthorized,” said Harrelson.
She says from that point, things started to get worse between Josh and his father-in-law.
“Law enforcement was called out here Friday evening, and there was a report was made [sic] about the threats to kill him,” she said.
Threats she says her family took seriously.
“Saturday morning, my husband talked to El Reno PD and told them the Jeep would not start, and that a tow truck needs to be sent out to get the vehicle. But we do not want the men on the property because there have been violent threats,” she said.
Later that day, the wrecker came....but not alone.
“My husband saw their vehicle pull up... they rounded the side of the house where the tow truck driver was hooking the vehicle up, took my son to the ground. The younger of the two was sitting on my son, beating him while the father stood over him kicking him,” she said.
Cathy says her husband fired a warning shot into the air and yelled for the men to leave.
“At that time, I saw the younger of the two pull out a gun and shoot my husband. My husband turned took aim on the younger one and took him down while the father was coming toward him... and my husband took him down as well,” she said.
A devastating act Cathy says that didn't have to happen.
“They were told not to come out here. They were told not to come out here and they came anyway,” she said.
Josh Harrelson is still in disbelief.
“I'm glad that my dad is still alive and he did what he had to do to protect his family and himself,” he said.
It’s unclear if the homeowner will face any charges.
“It was clearly self-defense. They came out here with a weapon to do harm, and they kept yelling 'we are going to kill you' to my husband and son,” Cathy said.
