OKLAHOMA CITY – A man is lucky to be alive after a vehicle slammed into his house early Monday morning.
It was around 2:45 a.m. when Don Padilla awoke inside his home near S.E. 51st St. and Bryant Ave.
Padilla said he got up to go to the bathroom just seconds before hearing a crash.
“I just got up to go to the bathroom, and it was kind of like thunder, hit the house like an earthquake actually and I couldn’t come back in the room. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ I looked out the door, and a van’s hanging out of the front of my house,” Padilla said.
Fire officials said the vehicle slammed straight into Padilla’s bedroom, coming to rest on the corner of his bed.
“I came outside, and it was still running, so I killed it, you know, because that’s what they say when you have an accident, kill the engine. So, I turned the engine off, but there was nobody. Keys in the ignition. Nobody in the car,” Padilla said.
Padilla is thankful he wasn’t injured, but the crash caused about $8,000 worth of damage to his home.
Also, his cat and dog were inside the bedroom when the crash occurred, but they are both okay.
Investigators said the driver was likely going too fast around a sharp corner in front of Padilla’s home.
Padilla hopes investigators can track down the mystery driver.
“I hope they’re held accountable for what they’ve done,” Padilla said.
