CYRIL, Okla. – An Oklahoma mother is mourning the loss of her teenage son after he drowned in a water hole over the weekend.
Dontavis Ware, 17, and his friend, 18-year-old Denton Walker, were at an abandoned rock quarry swimming when they both became exhausted and drowned, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
“I’m still in shock, really. It’s unbelievable. I just saw him right before I went to work. It’s just hard,” Ware’s mother, Lawana Edwards, told KSWO.
Officials say there were at least six teenagers swimming at the quarry.
A few of the teens told police that Ware was trying to save his friend.
“It was my son that jumped in and saved the other little boy, and they just couldn’t hang on. He would help anybody at any cost. That’s just how he is, very loving,” Edwards said.
The quarry is on private property with restricted access, according to OHP.
