LOS ANGELES – Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs on the planet. It is filled with love, worry, restless nights and sacrifices.

Jada Pinkett Smith is known for her acting and musical career, but also her successful relationship with actor Will Smith.

The couple has been married since 1997 and has two children together. Will Smith had a son from a previous relationship.

When Jada Pinkett Smith was asked by her daughter, Willow,  to describe the hardships of being a wife and a mother during an interview, she had a perfect answer.

“Being a wife and a mother is probably one of the most extraordinary experiences, and the most fulfilling experiences in my life. But at the same time, it has been very difficult to balance  the things that I want to do and have the freedoms that I want to have and also being responsible for you, and your brothers and your father. And I’m constantly, every day, trying to figure out that balance,” she said.

She said she struggles every day to find a balance between helping her children accomplish their dreams, helping  her husband accomplish his dreams and trying to figure out hers.

Over time, she says she has learned that mothers need to take care of themselves first.

“That’s a new thing for me. When you and Jaden were born, I had forgotten how to take care of myself because you guys were my world. You guys were my everything, you still are. But I had forgotten how to do that,” she said. “You always have to remember to take care of you first and foremost. Because when you stop taking care of yourself, you get out of balance and you really forget how to take care of others. And I think that we’ve been taught that taking care of yourself is a problem.”

When she became a mother, Pinkett Smith said that she was told she would have to sacrifice everything for her children.

“I think the re-messaging that we, as mothers, need to have and gravitate to is that you have to take care of yourself in order to have the alignment and the power to take care of others at the capacity that we do, because it fills the well.  What I believe that I do takes so much energy, so much work from heart, spirit and creativity, that I have to be responsible enough to take care of me.”

Pinkett Smith says that if mothers don’t take care of themselves, they may make their children or their spouses responsible for their happiness.

She said she has seen a change in her own household when she put herself first. While she was happier, she noticed that her husband and her children were happier as well.

The interview, which was posted to Facebook, has been viewed more than 16 million times and has received an overwhelming response from mothers across the country.
