OKLAHOMA CITY – Republican Joy Hofmeister was elected as Oklahoma’s State School Superintendent Tuesday night.

Hofmeister beat out Democratic candidate John Cox.

Hofmeister is a former public school teacher and former member of the Oklahoma State Board of Education.

She ran on a platform of higher teacher salaries and less standardized testing of students.

She said her two years serving on the State Board of Education gives her the opportunity to have a better working relationship with legislators than outgoing superintendent, Janet Barresi.

“That means I have a better shot at negotiating what’s best for our students and working with our experts in the classroom, our school leaders and our parents to get something done,” Hofmeister said, “and to do the right thing for our kids.”

Earlier this year, state lawmakers repealed federal Common Core standards for math and English, which was a move Hofmeister supported.

“We have great people in Oklahoma,” she said. “We have focus on Oklahoma education like we haven’t seen in a long time, and I’m ready to propose a road map of how we move forward so that we don’t mistake ‘motion’ for ‘progress.’ It’s time to get something done.”

Hofmeister is the owner of a math and reading tutoring center and has taught international curriculum standards to more than 4,000 students over the past 15 years.

In the republican primary election, Hofmeister defeated Barresi by winning all of Oklahoma’s 77 counties with nearly 58% percent of the vote.
