PIKEVILLE, KY–  The University of Pikeville has been added to the short list of colleges that are offering scholarships for students who want to  play video games competitively.

“It will be a regime a lot like athletics,”Bruce Parsons, Pikeville’s new media director said. “[Students will] have to have a certain GPA. We’ll look at them like student athletes. There will be practice time and video time when they have to study other teams for upcoming competitions.”

The on-scholarship gamers will also presumably be held to a certain behavioral standard while on – and off – the console, much like that of traditional athletes.

And as athletic teams must follow Title Nine, so must the gamers. So ladies are eligible, too.

The program is said to offer 20 scholarships for players matriculating in the Fall 2015 semester.
