OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – In Tuesday’s Health Check, KFOR and Dr. Kuykendall addressed a professional football player’s collapse on the field.
Primary Health Partners Dr. Kuykendall says in blunt trauma it can lead to cardiac arrest and the process itself happening can be very rare as it has to happen within 20 mili seconds of the cardiac cycle. It has to be precisely at the right moment and the right location on the chest wall for it to occur.
According to Dr. Kuykendall, the trauma is survivable and one can recover as long as treatment is started right away. Early treatment is key beginning with CPR, knowing the symptoms and having a AED to shock the heart back into appropriate rhythm is very important at any sporting event that something like this happens.
