SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A 34-year-old man is dead after police say he tried to stop one of his friends from driving after she had been drinking.

Authorities told FOX 5 that Jonathan Carlyle Merkley was celebrating his 34th birthday with friends in San Diego and had been drinking.

San Diego police say one of Merkley's friends had also been drinking alcohol and tried to get behind the wheel of a car.

Officials say Merkley walked in front of her car and laid down in front of the moving car to get her to stop.

However, she didn't stop. Instead, investigators say she ended up running over him and leaving the scene.

Merkley died at a hospital from internal injuries.
