NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A Connecticut man is recovering after an unfortunate sequence of events that led to him shooting himself in the shin over the weekend.

According to our Connecticut affiliate WVIT, 81-year-old James Pace, Sr., was trying to “fix” his “raccoon problem” when he sneezed and accidentally shot himself in the leg.

New Haven police officers said Pace told them the animal had been scratching at his door for days.

Armed with a .22-caliber rifle, the Pace waited for the raccoon to show up Saturday night.

He sneezed and fell from his chair while waiting and accidentally shot himself in his shin, according to police.

Pace secured the rifle, told his son what happened and the son drove him to the hospital.

He is expected to recover.
