OKLAHOMA CITY — Authorities have identified the suspect who was wounded in Saturday night’s officer-involved shooting. Police say 20-year-old Demontrail L. Smith is being held on preliminary charges of pointing a firearm and for possession of marijuana.

Smith was shot Saturday evening in the 1400 block of N.W. 17th St.

Two officers were in the area of Pitts Park working an “off-duty” program targeting gangs.

When the officers approached a group of people hanging out in the park, the suspect ran.

Police fired at the suspect when he turned on officers with a weapon.

This is not Smith’s first run-in with police.

He plead guilty in 2010 to three counts of assaulting a peace officer.

The involved officers are identified as 17-year police veteran detective John Szymanski and 4-year patrol officer Grant Hansen.

Both officers remain on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,
