STILLWATER, Okla. – A Stillwater man has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter for the 2012 beating death of another man.

Christopher Dawes, 28, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after entering the plea on Monday.

Dawes was originally charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of 32-year-old Jeremy Sutherland.

Defense attorneys claimed the crime was one of passion after testimony revealed that Dawes had been drinking at a party and awoke to find his girlfriend kissing Sutherland.

Sutherland died days later after suffering broken ribs, internal bleeding and severe head injuries.
