OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma City man is behind bars accused of running over a 7-year-old girl inside her own home.
The unusual crash took place over the weekend along Lyrewood Lane.
A car slammed through the wall of the apartment complex Sunday night, leaving a 7-year-old girl pinned underneath the vehicle for several minutes.
“It was so unbelievable,” said the victim’s father, Peter Matheri.
The girl’s family says the victim had been inside cleaning up the apartment when the car came crashing inside.
“She was helping her mom sweep the floor and …boom…,” said Matheri.
After the crash, witnesses say the suspect, Union Tanyi, ran away on foot.
Tanyi has since been arrested, and is accused of causing an accident without a valid driver’s license, and leaving the scene of an accident.
“We don’t know what caused the crash, regardless, you can’t leave the scene of an injury accident,” said Oklahoma City police MSgt. Gary Knight.
After spending a few days at Children’s Hospital, Claire, the little girl involved in the accident, was able to celebrate her 8th birthday at home.
She is still recovering, but her family is glad that she was able to spend her special day with her loved ones.
“It’s a blessing. The best thing that could happen to us,” Matheri said.
Claire’s family says she suffered a punctured lung, but she is expected to make a full recovery.
Police say there was a second person in the car, but that person has not been arrested or charged with a crime.
