OKLAHOMA CITY - Many families in need stood outside the Jesus House in freezing temperatures for hours overnight, all to get a grocery bag filled with Thanksgiving food items.

Even after waiting more than eight hours in the blistering cold, Haman Wise accepted his Thanksgiving food bag and turkey with a big smile.

Wise said, "We came out and feared out all the weather so we could get a basket."

The bags of food are possible because of private donations to the Jesus House.

For Wise, braving the cold was a small sacrifice to provide a Thanksgiving meal for his 9-year-old son.

Wise said, "He's only experienced it a few times and each time it's a blessing and I want him to see, yes people do care."

Ricky Navarro is in the same boat.

He was ready for the cold temperatures, an easier battle compared to others he's been faced with recently.

Navarro said, "I lost my job and I can't find one. They're too hard to find, so this is going to help me out tremendously."

He said his kids have been asking for pecan pie for days.

Navarro said, "They were wondering about it last week. I told them daddy got us turkey, we got it, I'm here."

One volunteer said she learned a lesson from the people fighting the cold temps for a holiday meal.

Robin Totten, the volunteer coordinator at the Jesus House, said, "Just thinking about people being out in the elements touches my heart, it's like, wow. I count my blessings a little bit more, to be a part of this makes me more aware."

The Jesus House still needs Thanksgiving sides to complete the food bags, such as mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberries.

Donations can be dropped off at the Jesus House office, located at 1335 W. Sheridan in Oklahoma City through 6 p.m. Tuesday.
