ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Beards are growing in popularity, but experts say you may want to think twice before growing one.
The findings from a small study may give you a new appreciation for a clean shaven face.
The results shocked even a seasoned microbiologist.
“I’m usually not that surprised and I was surprised by this,” said John Golobic, a microbiologist.
All of the beards had a lot of bacteria in them, but most of the bacteria was common on most surfaces.
Others were comparable to a toilet.
“These are the types of things that cause urinary tract infections,” Golobic said. “These are enterics, these are the types of things you find in feces.”
Golobic says if a city found samples like this in a water system, they would shut it down to be disinfected.
Golobic recommends that men scrub their beards and wash their hands.
“Try to keep your hands away from your face as much as possible,” he said.
