NORMAN, Okla.-- Mosquitoes can really ruin the great outdoors for families.

In addition to being a nuisance, the pests carry all sorts of diseases like West Nile Virus.

Now, many people are becoming concerned about Zika Virus, even though experts say no mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in the contiguous United States.

Sunny Nedrow,a mother of two, worries when her kids play outside.

"With everything going on about the mosquitoes and the viruses, it's obviously a concern for our family," says Nedrow, while watching her kids play at Andrews Park in Norman.

Nedrow says she makes sure her children are covered in bug spray before going outside their home in Goldsby.

"We have it right by the back door,"says Nedrow.

To supplement a parent's best efforts, crews with the City of Norman Parks Department monitor mosquitoes on a daily basis, and they have been doing it for over four decades.

"Norman is broken up into 14 districts and there's a mosquito trap in every district," says Norman Parks Superintendent Matt Hendren.

"Those mosquitos are counted every day, and if there are more than 25 mosquitoes in any given trap two days in a row, then that triggers spraying," says Hendren.

You can also help keep the mosquito population down by eliminating places where they multiply.

"Make sure there's no standing water on their property. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a tablespoon of water," says Hendren.

Hendren wants to clear up any confusion surrounding fears of mosquitoes carrying Zika.

"Zika is not in Oklahoma," says Hendren. "There have been some confirmed cases here, but that was from people that traveled abroad."
