KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After two children were found dirty and barefoot in an underground cave, a Kansas City mother is facing charges.
Brittany Mugrauer was charged with two counts of felony child endangerment.
Detectives were in the caves investigating an alleged stolen car operation when they spotted the children in a wooden crate.
Prosecutors told WDAF that the children were poorly dressed, barefoot and covered in dirt.
"It was put together for them to enjoy," the man who owns Underground Diesel said. "This was a place to keep them safe, out of the shop where there's forklifts moving around."
The 8-by-10-foot crate was furnished with bench seats from vehicles.
The man told WDAF that Mugrauer worked at the business, and had to bring her children to work with her.
In order to keep them away from the heavy machinery, they created the kids' "playhouse."
When he was injured at work, Mugrauer took him to a hospital for treatment, leaving the boys behind.
That's when, he says, the 4-year-old and the 6-year-old were found by investigators.
