MARYSVILLE, Calif. (CNN) – A teenage girl is lucky to be alive after her boyfriend sacrificed his life to save hers.

Mickayla Friend and Mateus Moore were posing for a picture on their way to a school dance.

Little did they know it would be their last photo together.

Just minutes after the picture was taken, a slow-moving train started heading toward them.

Mateus was killed instantly but their families had no idea what actually took place before tragedy struck.

Sandy Friend, Mickayla’s mother, said, “She had the love of a young man. He just sacrificed himself to save my daughter.”

Amazingly, Mickayla survived the accident.

According to Fox 40, she is in the ICU with serious injuries, including bleeding in the brain, broken bones, a liver split in half and internal bleeding.

She has been in and out of consciousness but was awake just long enough to give her mother insight into the last few seconds of Mateus’ life.

Sandy said, “I remember Mateus turning and looking back and I turned and looked back. I remember him pushing me out of the way of the train.”

Marcus Moore, Mateus’ father, said, “I’m just really proud of him and I know that if presented the opportunity, he would do it again to save someone’s life. I know that he would. I love him. I’m going to miss him with all my heart.”

Sandy said, “Mateus saved my daughter’s life. The most heroic thing that any other human being can do on this Earth is save the person that they love.”

Sadly, Mickayla has not been awake long enough for her family to tell her that Mateus was killed in the accident.

Sandy said, “She don’t know that Mateus is her angel now. We haven’t told her.”

Her family says aside from her new guardian angel, she’s always had one looking after her.

Sandy said, “Mickayla is named after her brother. Her brother was kidnapped and murdered when he was 8-years-old in Yuba City.”

She added, “Mickayla was born a year later, she took his namesake. She always had an angel on her side.”
